KINGDOM MATTERS:
Phone Ministry 24/7

By Grace Boneschansker

It’s 2 o’ clock in the morning and you just got the news that a loved one has had a serious heart attack. Who are you going to call? Staff and volunteers of the TV show 100 Huntley Street say they would love to pray with you.

“I think we’re the only 24 hours, seven days a week prayer ministry in Canada,” says Diana Morgan, director of the phone ministry. It’s also unique in that “because we have a broadcast, we’re a two-way communication” ministry, she adds.

The goal of the ministry is salvation. Callers are asked about specific needs for prayer but also “if they know Jesus personally” right off the bat. Callers who receive Jesus as their Saviour get an eight-week Bible study and letters explaining what to do next to grow in their faith, starting with directions to a nearby church that offers the Alpha course for new believers.

“Discipleship is important,” stresses Morgan. That goal is best met if the new Christian starts to attend a local church.

The prayer line receives a whopping 900 to 1,000 calls daily, mostly for “family concerns, physical healing and emotional stress,” says Morgan. People who answer the phones must first complete a six-week training course.

Morgan tells of a particular caller who left a big impression on her. A woman called who was a Jehovah’s Witness. She had become dissatisfied and “started reading the Bible on her own. She felt led to call in, so our prayer partner explained the salvation message to her and then she accepted the Lord.”

The prayer ministry also receives email and postal requests “over and above the phone ministry,” says Morgan.
